Description

From the creators of the Caldecott Honor Book "Song of the Water Boatman and Other Pond Poems "comes a celebration of ubiquitous life forms among us. Newbery Honor-winning poet Joyce Sidman presents another unusual blend of fine poetry and fascinating science illustrated in exquisite hand-colored linocuts by Caldecott Honor artist Beckie Prange. Ubiquitous (yoo-bik-wi-tuhs): Something that is (or seems to be) everywhere at the same time. Why is the beetle, born 265 million years ago, still with us today? (Because its wings mutated and hardened). How did the gecko survive 160 million years? (By becoming nocturnal and developing sticky toe pads.) How did the shark and the crow and the tiny ant survive millions and millions of years? When 99 percent of all life forms on earth have become extinct, why do some survive? And survive not just in one place, but in many places: in deserts, in ice, in lakes and puddles, inside houses and forest and farmland? Just how do they become ubiquitous?

Description

"Sometimes he dreamt he held her; that he would turn in bed and she would be there. But she was gone and he was old. Nearly seventy. Only cool paint met his fingers. Ma tres chere . . . Darkness started to fall, dimming the paintings. He felt the crumpled letter in his pocket. I loved you so, he said. I never would have had it turn out as it did. You were with all of us when we began, you gave us courage. These gardens at Giverny are for you but I m old and you re forever young and will never see them. . . . " "" In the mid-nineteenth century, a young man named Claude Monet decided that he would rather endure a difficult life painting landscapes than take over his father s nautical supplies business in a French seaside town. Against his father s will, and with nothing but a dream and an insatiable urge to create a new style of art that repudiated the Classical Realism of the time, he set off for Paris. But once there he is confronted with obstacles: an art world that refused to validate his style, extreme poverty, and a war that led him away from his home and friends. But there were bright spots as well: his deep, enduring friendships with men named Renoir, Cezanne, Pissarro, Manet a group that together would come to be known as the Impressionists, and that supported each other through the difficult years. But even more illuminating was his lifelong love, Camille Doncieux, a beautiful, upper-class Parisian girl who threw away her privileged life to be by the side of the defiant painter and embrace the lively Bohemian life of their time. His muse, his best friend, his passionate lover, and the mother to his two children, Camille stayed with Monet and believed in his work even as they lived in wretched rooms, were sometimes kicked out of those, and often suffered the indignities of destitution. She comforted him during his frequent emotional torments, even when he would leave her for long periods to go off on his own to paint in the countryside. But Camille had her own demons secrets that Monet could never penetrate, including one that when eventually revealed would pain him so deeply that he would never fully recover from its impact. For though Camille never once stopped loving the painter with her entire being, she was not immune to the loneliness that often came with being his partner. A vividly-rendered portrait of both the rise of Impressionism and of the artist at the center of the movement, "Claude and Camille" is above all a love story of the highest romantic order. "From the Hardcover edition.""

Description

Why do some people thrive while others merely survive? It seems that the answer lies not in the circumstances that we each experience, but rather, in our individual brains. The human brain may have evolved over millions of years, but it still uses the same basic survival mechanisms as it did when our earliest ancestors walked the planet. In this modern world, these default threat responses, which were originally designed to protect us, are more likely to sabotage us and hold us back from experiencing all that life has to offer. Wired for Life explains why we think, decide and act the way we do. It explores the five fears commonly triggered by our brains' threat response - fear of failure, fear of losing control, fear of standing out, fear of missing out, and fear of facing the truth - and how these fears creep undetected into so many parts of our lives, impairing our ability to experience happiness, freedom, success and fulfilment. Drawing on their experience with corporate and private clients, the authors reveal a three-step process for harnessing the power of your mind, overcoming fears, and creating the life you want. It shows you how to Wake Up, Think Differently, and Grow, changing your life in often surprising ways. This book will help you understand your brain, providing insight into why you behave the way you do, make the choices you make and get the results that you do. Once you understand this, you will realise that changing your mind can actually change your life!

Description

This is the second of a series of six meditation recordings by Glenn Harrold and Ali Calderwood, which are based upon the ancient solfeggio musical scale. Each note in this scale has specific healing properties and this recording uses the second note, which resonates to a frequency of 417hz. This particular frequency works to dissolve emotional patterns and imprints from the past and facilitate positive changes. It will also help to clear other emotional patterns, such as low self-esteem, self-rejection, overindulgence, jealousy and emotional instability, all of which exist within the same vibrational energy. Glenn Harrold's skilled vocal delivery and guided meditation combined with Ali Calderwood's deep and moving soundscapes tuned to 417hz combine to create an amazingly powerful meditation recording that has the potential to clear away blocks on a cellular level. About the Ancient Solfeggio Scale and Healing Sounds: Modern science is now beginning to recognise what the ancient mystics throughout time have been saying; that everything is in a constant state of vibration, and therefore everything that is vibrating has a sound (even if it's not audible). Everything also has its own optimum rate of vibration, and this is called resonance. When we are in resonance, we are in balance and harmony with creation. Emotions and mental states also have their own optimum resonance and with the recognition that every organ, and every cell, absorbs and emits sound, we can therefore understand how specific sounds and frequencies can be used as powerful healing tools. This is how the ancient Solfeggio frequencies work and is why the Gregorian monks used this specific scale for chanting and healing. These incredible tones each resonate to specific frequency that our original blueprint is composed from. Exposing ourselves to these frequencies helps to bring our bodies, cells and DNA back into balance. Different parts of our bodies and organs all have specific frequencies of optimum resonance (perfect state of health), and therefore listening to these tones allows the body to absorb and remember (know) its original blueprint, moving it back towards its prefect state of alignment and resonance (health). The music with this series of mediations has been specially crafted and precisely tuned to transmit each of the solfeggio frequencies. By combining these sounds with a guided meditation, you also have the potential to release deep-rooted blockages. These compositions also contain an array of sacred instruments and sounds such as crystal bowls and didgeridoo and sacred chants, which work to further enhance the effects of the Solfeggio tones.

Description

Why do some people always seem to have new ideas while others of equal intelligence never do? Lateral Thinking is Edward de Bono's original portrayal of what lateral thinking is, how it works and how to use it to develop your own potential for thinking and problem solving. First published in 1967 as The Use of Lateral Thinking, this classic international bestseller remains as relevant to learning, problem solving and creative thinking today as when it was first published. De Bono argues that conventional vertical thinking often inhibits our ability to solve problems and come up with new ideas. He then shows that lateral thinking is a far easier and more natural way to generate simple, sound and effective ideas and offers guidance on how to develop your own ability to think laterally. Lateral thinking is a technique that anyone can learn and benefit from.
